Care Center of Laurel represented the third largest nursing home in Jones County in the first quarter of 2026, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data shows.

The facility reported 120 available beds, exceeding the Jones County average by 13 beds as of that period, and saw an average daily census of 81.8 residents throughout the quarter.

The CMS assigned Care Center of Laurel an overall rating of 2 out of 5, which falls below Mississippi’s nursing home average of 2.7 for that quarter.

In the same timeframe, Comfort Care Nursing Center operated as the largest in Jones County with 126 beds, followed by Jones Company Rest Home at 122 beds.

CMS records show that Care Center of Laurel did not receive any fines or penalties during the first quarter of 2026.

There were two for-profit nursing homes in Jones County, Mississippi, as of the same reporting period.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the United States’ population of older adults is rising, while the number of individuals in younger age groups is declining. From 2020 to 2024, Americans 65 and older grew by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the last century, the older adult population expanded from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A study published in 2021 found that almost half of those age 65 and older—about 28 million people—might require long-term services and supports. The research further projects that more than one-third of this demographic could need nursing home care at some point.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
