Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates the nation’s older adult population is expanding while the number of children declines. Between 2020 and 2024, there was a 13% increase in Americans age 65 and older, while the count of people under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The older adult population in the U.S. has surged over the last century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 analysis estimates that about half of adults in this age group, or approximately 28 million people, may need long-term care services. The report also forecasts that over one-third could ultimately require nursing home placement.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director at the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
