Ben Higdon drove in three runs and Camden Sunstrom pitched six innings as Southern Miss defeated ULM 7-3 on May 3 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, completing a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep.
The win moves the Golden Eagles to second place in the league standings and marks their 20th home victory of the season. It is also the program’s 14th consecutive regular season win in May. The team now holds an overall record of 34-14 and a conference record of 16-8.
Higdon led the offense with three runs batted in, while Davis Gillespie and Matthew Russo each collected three hits. Drey Barrett contributed two runs batted in during Southern Miss’s twelve-hit performance. The Golden Eagles scored four times in the third inning, all with two outs, highlighted by run-scoring singles from Barrett, Higdon, and Tucker Stockman.
Sunstrom limited ULM to four hits over his six innings without allowing a walk and striking out five batters. He allowed just one run—a solo home run by Davis Mauzy—in earning his fourth win of the season. Southern Miss added three more runs in the sixth inning on singles from Russo, Barrett, and Higdon.
ULM scored twice in the seventh inning off Kros Sivley to narrow the final margin. Seaver Sheets took the loss for ULM after giving up four runs over just under three innings pitched.
Southern Miss will travel to James Madison next weekend for their first-ever series against that opponent. The series begins Friday, May 8 at 5 p.m.
