The Southern Miss baseball team will play its only home game of the week against New Orleans on April 6 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
This matchup is the only meeting between the No. 10 ranked Golden Eagles, who hold a record of 23-9, and the Privateers, who are currently 14-20, for this season. Fans can watch the game on ESPN+ or listen through affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network and SouthernMiss.com. A limited number of tickets remain available online.
This contest marks the fifth consecutive season that Southern Miss and New Orleans have faced each other in baseball. It will be New Orleans’ third straight visit to Hattiesburg during this stretch. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series with a record of 64-52 overall and are ahead by a margin of 33-23 in games played in Hattiesburg. The teams also met in postseason play during the 2008 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, where Southern Miss won both games.
Several players from Southern Miss enter Tuesday’s game with notable hitting streaks. Joey Urban currently has a ten-game hitting streak, batting .333 over that span with two home runs and eight runs batted in. Kyle Morrison follows with a seven-game streak and has hit safely in all but five games this season, including previous streaks of eleven and eight games. Davis Gillespie has batted safely in his last six contests, holding a .391 average during that time.
Redshirt sophomore Drake Meeks is expected to make his first collegiate start as pitcher for Southern Miss after making three appearances this season without allowing any walks and recording two strikeouts over three innings pitched.
After facing New Orleans, Southern Miss will travel to Lafayette for a Sun Belt Conference series against Louisiana beginning Friday.
