Southern Miss defeated James Madison 11-1 on May 9 in a Sun Belt Conference baseball game at Veterans Memorial Park, securing the series with an eight-inning run rule victory.
The win marks the fifth consecutive victory for the Golden Eagles, who improved their overall record to 36-14 and their conference record to 18-8. The team has now won four straight league series. The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. Central Time.
Pitcher Camden Clark led Southern Miss by throwing six shutout innings, retiring the first fourteen batters he faced before allowing a single in the fifth inning. Clark allowed only three hits, struck out nine batters, walked one, and earned his seventh win of the season without a loss.
Joey Urban contributed significantly on offense with three hits and a three-run home run—his twelfth of the year—while Ben Higdon also hit a three-run homer, his fourth this season. Other key contributors included Kyle Morrison, Drey Barrett, and Higdon with two hits each. Tucker Stockman opened scoring for Southern Miss in the third inning with an RBI groundout. In the fourth inning, Lawson Odom drove in another run with a sacrifice fly before Seth Smith extended his hitting streak to eleven games by singling in another run. Urban capped off that frame with his home run to center field.
The Golden Eagles added more runs throughout the game: Morrison had an RBI single in the sixth inning; Barrett delivered another RBI single during a four-run eighth; then Higdon’s home run put Southern Miss ahead by double digits.
James Madison managed its only score in the eighth inning after drawing walks and being hit by pitches against two Southern Miss relievers. JMU starter Holden McKinney took the loss after giving up six runs (one earned) over just under four innings pitched.
