Southern Miss men’s golf completed the first round of the NCAA Athens Regional on May 18, finishing in 11th place at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
The tournament marks Southern Miss’s debut appearance in the NCAA Regionals. The team’s performance places them among a competitive field, with Louisville holding first after day one and Auburn and Vanderbilt tied for second.
Freshman Jake Moffitt led Southern Miss by tying for fourth individually, carding a four-under-par 67 that included five birdies. Moffitt also ranked among the top eight players on par-4 holes with an average score of 3.82. Supakorn Amornchaichan recorded a one-over-par 72 with thirteen pars, placing him tied for twelfth in total pars for the round.
Walker Wise finished his round at three-over-par (74), while Benjamin Fernandez shot five-over (76). Together, Wise and Fernandez contributed twenty pars and five birdies to the team effort. Matthew Javier ended his round at seven-over (78), highlighted by a stretch of five consecutive pars on the back nine capped by a birdie.
The Golden Eagles’ combined score was five-over-par (289) through eighteen holes. Louisville led all teams at ten-under-par, followed by Auburn and Vanderbilt at seven-under each. BYU was fourth at six-under, while Rice and Georgia were tied for fifth at five-under.
