Southern Miss women’s basketball will begin a three-game road trip with a matchup against Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference. The Lady Eagles currently hold a 10-5 overall record and are 3-1 in conference play, aiming to stay near the top of the Sun Belt standings and match their best conference start since the 2022-23 season.

The team comes off a close win over Troy, where Jakayla Johnson scored 30 points, earning her Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors for the first time. Johnson leads Southern Miss with an average of 13.3 points per game and tops the conference in scoring during league games with 24.0 points per contest.

Five starters from Southern Miss—Johnson, Hayleigh Breland, Sakyia White, Carly Keats, and Meloney Thames—are each averaging double figures in scoring. Sakyia White has increased her performance in conference games, averaging 15.5 points and 12.3 rebounds over four contests.

Southern Miss is among a select group of Division I programs where all five starters average double-digit points, alongside teams such as Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Princeton, and South Carolina. Johnson is also one of only three players nationally to score at least 20 points in each of her first four conference games this season.

Appalachian State enters the game seeking to end a nine-game losing streak in conference play that dates back to last season. The Mountaineers have yet to win a Sun Belt game this year and have an average scoring margin deficit of nearly twelve points per league game. Daisia Mitchell leads App State with an average of 11.3 points per game.

The upcoming contest marks an opportunity for App State to even the all-time series against Southern Miss at two wins apiece after claiming their first victory over the Lady Eagles last January in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss won its only previous visit to Boone in January 2023.
