Tucker Stockman delivered a game-winning single in the ninth inning to give No. 7 Southern Miss a 2-1 victory over Ole Miss on March 10 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The matchup drew a crowd of 5,775, marking the fifth largest attendance in the facility’s history. The Golden Eagles improved their record to 15-2 with their fourth consecutive win, while the Rebels dropped to 15-3.
The game remained tied at one run each heading into the bottom of the ninth. Davis Gillespie led off with a single for Southern Miss. After two outs, Ole Miss brought in reliever Landon Koenig, who walked his first batter before giving up Stockman’s decisive hit on a 2-2 pitch.
Both teams scored their only other runs in the fifth inning through solo home runs. Tristan Bassetta put Ole Miss ahead with his eighth homer of the season, but Kyle Morrison responded for Southern Miss with his team-leading sixth home run to tie the score.
Southern Miss closer Camden Clark entered during a tense top of the ninth and recorded a flyout and strikeout to end an Ole Miss threat. Clark earned the win and moved to a 3-0 record this season. JP Robertson took the loss for Ole Miss after allowing Gillespie’s leadoff single in the final frame.
Southern Miss pitchers combined for nine strikeouts while limiting walks and hits by pitch. Stockman was the only player from either team to collect two hits as Southern Miss outhit Ole Miss six to three.
Following this homestand, Southern Miss will begin Sun Belt Conference play on the road against Arkansas State starting Friday at 6 p.m.
