Cost of college went up for all students at the University of Southern Mississippi

In-state tuition and fees rose 4.9 percent for 2018-19 at the University of Southern Mississippi, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Mississippi residents paid $8,624 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $406 more than the $8,218 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 23.2 percent more than residents this year, or $10,624. Their price tag grew 4 percent from $10,218 in 2017-18.

About 66 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Mississippi residents. About 33 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 94 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,645 students received grants or scholarships totaling $13.9 million and 1,297 students took out student loans totaling more than $8.7 million.

Including all undergraduates (14,509), 9,147 students used grants or scholarships totaling $68.2 million, and 6,923 students took out $59.5 million in federal student loans.
