Join Mississippi Secretary State Michael Watson on Monday, April 11th at 6:00 pm in the Hattiesburg Library meeting room for "Mississippi’s Initiative Process : What It Was, What It is, What Can Be"
The initiative , the power of the citizenry to enact legislation, has been a contested issue in Mississippi's history; never more so than after the passage of the Medical Marijuana by statewide vote and subsequent striking down of the initiative process by the Mississippi Supreme Court.
Michael Watson, Mississippi's Secretary of State, examines the initiative process in Mississippi and explains where we are and what might be done. His talk is a part of our ongoing programming held in conjunction with the exhibit Voices & Votes: Democracy in America.
Voices & Votes is a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution. It examines the nearly 250 year old American experiment of a government "of, by and for the people" and how each generation since continues to question how to form "a more perfect union." The Library has added a number of programs and extra display items to enhance the experience. Voice & Votes run through May 14th.
