In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.
This week was established to pay special recognition to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
Since 1952, we have felt the heartache of losing one of our own six times. It’s six times too many, and we feel that it’s important to remember our fallen heroes. Throughout this week, we will be posting our fallen officers.

On March 9, 1952 Officers M.W Vinson, Jr. and Jessie Everett responded to a burglary call at Ace Weathers Motor Company, located on North Main Street at the time. While canvassing the scene, the suspect left with a second suspect by vehicle and the officers followed. Both officers were shot and killed in a gunfight when they stopped the vehicle at the intersection of West 4th Street and North Street.
We thank you both for your service, and the ultimate sacrifice that you made.
