I am saddened by the passing of former Library Board President Bruce McCarthy. The Library's success can be directly contributed to support from the whole community; but Bruce's dedication, love and work for our library makes him stand out amongst all our many friends and supporters.
Bruce served over 25 years as President of the Library Board of Trustees. In every matter. large and small, he was there. He contributed both financially and through "sweat equity" to the building of the Hattiesburg and Petal libraries and to their on-going operations.
I've selected two images (though dozens would in some ways be more appropriate) as my favorite reflections of Bruce. One is very early during his tenure as Board President as he talks to the media. Bruce was always ready to stand up at any opportunity and deliver the message of why the library was vital. The second is from the library mural, "The Spirit that Builds." Simply put, the mural would not exist without his effort.
Let me also express the Library's deep condolence to Peggy and the rest of Bruce's family.
Services for Bruce will be Wednesday, June 15th. Visitation will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 1:00 to 3:00 followed by a funeral mass.
