What happens when you arrive at Forrest General after a serious trauma?
When the Emergency Department gets notified by Emergency Medical Services about a new patient, they quickly jump into action.
Once the trauma patient arrives, trauma team members perform assessments, life-saving measures, and the diagnostic procedures that are needed. Forrest General Hospital has a 24/7, full-service blood bank available to prepare blood products for administration to trauma patients.
Multiple specialists may work simultaneously, as Forrest General staffs an array of specialists. Trauma surgeons and neurosurgeons are in-house 24/7. Orthopaedic trauma surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons, urologists, OB/GYNs, oral Surgeons, and maxillofacial surgeons are on-call and available 24/7.
Based on injury and need, severely injured patients may undergo emergency surgery in the Operating Room. Our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is available for critically injured patients. critical care medicine physicians are in-house 24/7.
While in the hospital, rehabilitation services are available to the patient including physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, all with activities designed to help the injured patient function to the greatest extent of his or her own remaining abilities and with little to no pain.
