2019-2020: What were the backgrounds of Covington County students?

Of the 2,724 students enrolled in Covington County schools in 2019-2020, 49.3% were Black or African American, according to the Mississippi Department of Education. This was the most represented ethnicity among Covington County students.

This is a 0.9% increase over the previous school year.

Hopewell Elementary School had the highest enrollment of Black or African American students in the 2019-2020 school year.

A snapshot of Covington County schools showed 49.3% students were Black or African American, 43.1% were White, 3.2% were Hispanic or Latino and 1.7% were Two or More Races.

There are eight schools in Covington County.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly one decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
