Texas State overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Southern Miss 74-69 in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday in San Marcos. With this result, both teams now hold an 11-9 record for the season, while Southern Miss moves to 5-3 and Texas State to 4-4 in conference play.
Tylik Weeks led Southern Miss with 24 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the field. Dylan Brumfield contributed 16 points, marking his sixth consecutive game scoring in double figures. The Golden Eagles collected 14 steals from Texas State’s 18 turnovers and shot over 83 percent from the free throw line.
“Southern Miss had 14 steals against Texas State, reaching 10+ for the sixth time this season. The Golden Eagles had 10 in the first half and now have 10+ steals in two of the last three games,” according to team notes.
The starting lineup for Southern Miss included Curt Lewis, Brewer Carruth, Tylik Weeks, Dylan Brumfield, and Djahi Binet. Izzy Hart was the first substitute at just over twelve minutes into the first half.
Both teams were effective at drawing fouls and converting free throws; Southern Miss made at least twenty free throws for the seventh time this season by going 20-for-24 from the line. Texas State finished with a shooting percentage of nearly fifty percent from the floor and converted six out of thirteen attempts from beyond the arc. In contrast, Southern Miss struggled from deep with only three makes on fifteen attempts.
Weeks has now scored twenty or more points seven times this season and reached double figures eighteen times overall. Djahi Binet recorded a career-high four blocks during the contest, surpassing his previous best of three. Izzy Hart set a new season high with four steals.
Brewer Carruth added seven points—his highest output since December—and Brumfield matched his season high with five steals.
The game began slowly as both teams combined for only two field goals in their first nine attempts. After falling behind early due to turnovers and missed shots, Southern Miss found momentum mid-way through the first half but entered halftime ahead by just one point at 28-27.
Texas State started strong after halftime with a nine-point run that forced an early timeout by Southern Miss. Despite defensive efforts that kept Texas State scoreless for nearly four minutes midway through the second half, offensive struggles plagued Southern Miss as they went almost eight minutes without making a field goal late in regulation.
A late surge brought them within seven points with forty seconds remaining but Texas State secured victory by converting key free throws down the stretch as Brumfield hit a final three-pointer at the buzzer.
With this win, Texas State improved its all-time record against Southern Miss when playing at home in San Marcos to three wins and one loss. The overall series between these programs is now led by Southern Miss five games to four after splitting their matchups this season.
Southern Miss will continue its road trip next Thursday against Georgia State in Atlanta.
