Southern Miss men’s basketball team lost to Appalachian State 70-63 on Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum. Both teams had difficulty shooting, with Southern Miss making 36.2 percent of its shots and App State finishing at 39.2 percent.

Southern Miss started the game with a new lineup featuring Izzy Hart, Curt Lewis, Tylik Weeks, Dylan Brumfield, and Djahi Binet. Djahi Binet scored the first points for Southern Miss with a layup, marking the fourth time he has opened scoring for the team this season. Brewer Carruth was the first substitute off the bench.

The Golden Eagles recorded 42 rebounds in the game, marking their seventh game this season with at least 40 rebounds. Since the start of the 2022-23 season, Southern Miss holds a record of 41-11 at Reed Green Coliseum and is now 6-2 at home this season.

App State’s win narrows Southern Miss’s lead in their all-time series to 3-2, with App State winning the last two meetings.

Djahi Binet reached double figures for the tenth time this season by scoring 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds—his sixth game this year with double-digit rebounds. Tylik Weeks led Southern Miss in scoring with 21 points, reaching double figures for the twenty-first time and posting his ninth game of at least 20 points. Weeks also collected eight rebounds.

Izzy Hart contributed 14 points for his eighth double-digit scoring effort of the year and matched his season high by making three three-pointers. Dylan Brumfield tied his own season high by pulling down seven rebounds against App State.

During the game, both teams struggled offensively early on but traded leads throughout much of the first half. App State took a narrow lead into halftime after both sides shot below their usual percentages from deep.

In the second half, Southern Miss went four minutes without a field goal before getting back on track through free throws from Weeks and Binet. The Golden Eagles briefly regained a one-point lead midway through the second half before App State responded with a decisive run to secure victory.

Appalachian State shot well from three-point range (47 percent), while Southern Miss made only three out of seventeen attempts from beyond the arc (17.6 percent).

Southern Miss will remain in Hattiesburg to host James Madison on Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
